Josef Steinböck

Born in 1967 in Tulln (Lower Austria), high school diploma at the commercial academy in Tulln • Studied bass tuba at the Vienna University of Music under Prof. Nikolaus Schafferer, instrumental pedagogy, music education and instrumental music education • Jazz studies at the Vienna Conservatory under Prof. Dr. Erich Kleinschuster. • Teaching qualification with distinction, diploma examination with unanimous distinction and award of recognition from the Federal Minister. Josef Steinböck has been a tuba player and member in the "Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg" since 1991 and the OENM "Ensemble for New Music Salzburg". • Regular solo performances with piano or orchestra, radio and television recordings at home and abroad. • Active orchestral activity with: "NDR Hannover", "SWR Stuttgart", "Staatsoper München", "Wiener Symphoniker", "RSO Wien", "Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra", "Philharmonia Orchestra London" and many others. • Intensive involvement with brass chamber music: He has played with: "Brass Quintet of the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg", "Art of Brass Vienna", "Opera Brass München", "BRass Ensemble München", "Low Brass Trio" and leads a class for brass chamber music at the University of Music and Theater in Munich. • Many contemporary works were premiered by Josef Steinböck or first performed in Austria (e.g. works by Franco Donatoni, Klaus Ager, Michael Mautner, Vincent Persichatti), many composers have written works for Josef Steinböck - e.g. Simone Fontanelli, Mauricio Sotello, Andreas Aigmüller, Jakob Gruchmann, Siegfried Steinkogler, Peter WesenAuer, Hartmut Schmidt, Georg Arányi-Aschner. • Numerous engagements with internationally recognized contemporary music ensembles, such as "Klangforum Wien" (membership from 1989 till 2000), "OENM" (membership since 2000), "Die Reihe", "Ensemble Kontrapunkte", “Ensemble Windkraft Innsbruck”, and many years of big band experience round off his diverse musical activities. • Josef Steinböck is a jury member at many national and international music competitions (Int. Jan Koetsier Competition Munich (GER), Instrumental Competition Markneukirchen (GER), International Brass Instruments Competition Gdansk (PL), FINALIS Competition Bialystok (PL), German University Competition (GER), International Tuba Competition of Moscow Conservatory (RUS), SVIREL (SI), International Competition Varazdin (HR), an internationally sought-after lecturer and teacher, and initiator and artistic director of the "Bläserurlaub" (Info: www.blaeserurlaub.at), the most successful wind instrument course in Austria since 1996. • Since 1988 he has been teaching tuba, ensembles, chamber music and orchestra in various schools and music schools throughout Austria. • Since October 2002 he has been a full ordinary professor of tuba and brass chamber music at the University of Music and performing Arts in Munich (GER). • He has been working since 1986 as conductor for Windband and Brassensemble Projects in Austria and Germany, in his functions as professor of brass chambermusic in munich and as teacher of brass ensemble in Musikum Salzburg he has been conducting numerous concerts and projects. • 2019 and 2020 he was conducting at Salzburg Festival. He was leading a Project of New Music Ensemble OENM with contempory music with works of Mauricio Kagel and Theodor Burkali followed by a concert tour . • He gave guest courses at the music universities "Mozarteum Salzburg", Graz, Vienna, Trossingen, Gdansk, Ljubljana, P.I. Tschaikovsky Conservatory and Gnessin concervatory Moscow. • In 2011 he was awarded the Pedagogical Recognition Prize of the Austrian Wind Music Youth. • His teaching languages are german, englisch and french.
